Adrin Rauf:

Learn business processes as much as you can and embrace change and challenge from your early career steps. Be entrepreneurial and act with sense of ownership.

NH: Nurhadi

Adrin: Adrin Rauf.

[NH]: Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and how you ended up in your current role as Business Unit Lead?

[Adrin]: Yes, sure. Happy to share my journey with the audience here. So, I started my career as Graduate Trainee in a US FMCG company producing biscuits and cheese in Indonesia.

I was lucky enough to met several mentors who coached me in different roles across supply chain function such as: production (working in shift), production planning, continuous improvement, manufacturing (incl. Engineering), and procurement. Then I moved to a global life sciences company where I am part of the Consumer Health division.

In 2013, I started my role in Operational Excellence, and then I was given oppertunities to learn and contribute in different roles: supply chain management, operations, and with a revamped operating model, I am now learning and contributing in leading a business unit.

[NH]: In your professional career, you’ve mentioned that you were assigned to Cleveland, Tennessee for the short-periode. How did your experience in the USA influence your approach to supply chain management when you returned to Indonesia?

[Adrin]: That was really memorable story. I was luckily coached by some great mentors and given opportunity to work in STA in the US.

This experience shaped me to become more holistic and emphasize the resilience of the supply chain organization.

[NH]: Can you share a specific example of a supply chain innovation or improvement you've implemented recently?

[Adrin]: In the past few years, we had leveraged step by step the planning and execution system into a more digitized yet integrated platform. In the planning parts, multi-echelon inventory are getting more visible to enable faster and agile decision making. While on the shop floor, we have implemented digitally enabled process confirmation on Cleaning, Inspection, Lubrication (CIL) activities of our machinary. This will guide our operators in doing the activities step by step with clear indications and targeted outcomes to drive better equipment reliability.

[NH]: How has the role of supply chain management evolved in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Indonesia?

[Adrin]: COVID-19 has changed the role of supply chain management in pharmaceutical industry significantly. Resilience has become pivotal point and the key outcomes. From just in time it has shifted into just in case, where SCM are required to be agile and adaptable to environment turbulence.

Tri-sourcing is the new norm instead of dual-sourcing. Near-shoring has been more prioritized, despite the challenge we face where raw materials are mostly imported from overseas, Indonesian government has put the Active Pharma Ingredients (API) industry as the key priorities for foreign direct investment.

Post-covid market dynamics has been unprecedented. SCM is now even closer to the customer and act as business partner while being entrepreneurial.

[NH]: What advice would you give to young professionals aspiring to build a career in supply chain management?

[Adrin]: Learn business processes as much as you can and embrace change and challenge from your early career steps. Be entrepreneurial and act with sense of ownership.
